Devkota Centenary

Poet Devkota’s 100th Birth Anniversary

Lunar: Kartik 12, 2065 (October 28, 2008)
Solar: Kartik 27, 2065 (November 12, 2008)

GENERAL REQUEST

We request everyone interested in the promotion of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota to commemorate his centenary from October 2008 to October 2009 in any way they can and to send us a brief report of how and when the event was conducted. We would like many events to take place all over Nepal, and outside Nepal too.

GENERAL NOTICE

Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota Study and Research Centre will conduct various programmes to commemorate the loving memory of Poet Laxmi Prasad Devkota from October 2008 to October 2009. Any person or institution interested in assisting the programmes are invited to contact us at: ppdevkota@wlink.com.np

This year, according to the lunar calendar, the poet's birthday falls on Tuesday, October 28, 2008, corresponding to Kartik 12, 2065.

CENTENARY PROGRAMMES

Devkota Centre plans to organize the following events during the Devkota Centenary Year. We have started forming sub-committees to manage each of the following events. Anyone interested in helping us is welcome to contact us.

On May 9th. 2008, the executive body meeting of Devkota Centre formalized a Fund Raising Sub-Committee co-ordinated by Laxman Gautam. The members of this sub-committee are as follows: Sharad Chandra Thakur, Rajendra Panthi, Shuvaraj Ranavat, Nirmal Kumar Thapa, Sreisty Shrestha, and Bikash Khanal. The purpose of this fund raising sub-committee is to raise funds for the activities of Devkota Centenary.

I. One Hundredth Birth Anniversary of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota: This event will take place at Kavi-Kunja on November 12, 2008 (Kartik 27, 2065) at 1:00 pm.

II. CULTURAL EVENT: Devkota Centre plans to hold a cultural programme from March 27-28, 2009 (corresponding to Chaitra 14-15, 2065). The sub-committe responsible for the organization of the Cultural Event consists of the following members under the guidance of Ratna Shumsher Thapa: Khem Aryal, Prakash Subedi, Neerbhim, Bibhu Koirala, Rameshwor Raut 'Matridas', and Pradeep Niraula.

III. INTERNATIONAL CONFERENCE: This conference will take place in Kathmandu from February 24-26, 2009 (corresponding to Falgun 13-15, 2065). We would like to promote the multi-dimensional personality of Devkota to feature significantly in the conference papers. Sub-Committee Members: Professor Dr. Rameshwar P. Adhikary, Hriseekesh Upadhyaya.

IV. POETRY SYMPOSIUM: Devkota Centre plans to hold a poetry symposium in the honour of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota. The sub-committee responsible for the organization of this event consists of the following members: Thakur Belbase (co-ordinator), Shailendu Prakash Nepal, Saru Pokharel, Sushila Regmi, Ramesh Dhungel, and Surajbir Bajracharya.

V. Establishment of Literature Award:Devkota Centre has started churning the possibilities of establishing a literature award to honour the memory of Poet Devkota sometime during the Devkota Centenary Year.

VI. Publication of Devkota's Works: Devkota Centre plans to bring out an anthology of Mahakavi Devkota's long narrative (and descriptive) poems during the centenary year.

VII. School Level Poetry Writing Competition: Shankar Bharati has agreed to co-ordinate the sub-committee handling this event. The other members ofthe sub-committee are: Khuma Bhadur Subedi and Chetanath Dhamala.

VIII. College Level Essay Writing Competition: On October 2, 2008, the meeting of the Executive Body of Devkota Centre assigned the responsibility of organizing this event to its member Ammaraj Joshi.

IX. Art Exhibition: Paintings based on the life and work of Mahakavi Devkota.

X. BLOOD DONATION PROGRAMME: Suresh Thapa will co-ordinate this event.

XI. HEALTH CAMP: Suresh Thapa will co-ordinate this event.

XIII. Stamp Publication: On the 19th. of August, 2008, (corresponding to Bhadra 3, 2065), Devkota Centre requested the Postal Service Department of the Governemnt of Nepal to publish postal stamps of Mahakavi Laxmi Prasad Devkota to respect his contribution to the nation..
